When Elizabeth first meets Mr. Darcy, she perceives him to be a pompous, pretentious man who only cares about himself. He looks down upon those who are less fortunate then he is, and only socializes with people with the equality of his high upbringing. In Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy at first appears moody and withdrawn, and unable to show his true feelings. Even though Mr. Darcy’s pride is rooted I his character throughout the book, overtime his heartfelt emotions for Elizabeth rise and soften his harsh demeanor by allowing himself to show his hidden compassion for Elizabeth.
